Bangladesh Flood Relief 2024

Learn more about the ongoing crisis: the places it is impacting,
the extent, and the reality Bangladeshis are facing.

When and How It Started

In late August 2024, Bangladesh was hit by severe flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains and sudden upstream water flows from Indian dams. The flooding was intensified by poor weather over the Bay of Bengal. It reached Bangladesh's north-eastern regions first, such as Sylhet and Chattogram, as they are closer to the Surma and Kushiyara rivers. It then progressed to southern areas such as Feni, Brahmanbaria, and Kumilla, even reaching the outskirts of Dhaka.

Extent of the Impact

The floods have affected over 15.6 million people, displacing more than 500,000 individuals into temporary shelters. Rural infrastructure has been heavily impacted, with roads submerged and nearly 300,000 hectares of crops damaged.

The Reality On the Ground

“I don’t know if my students are alive. I’m crying lots of the time. There’s no electricity, no gas, no internet.” - Abdus Salam, volunteer and English teacher in Dhaka

Communities remain cut off from essential services, and relief workers are struggling to deliver aid due to damaged, flooded roads and power outages. Families have been contracting diseases from the water and don't have access to clean water. They are left with no place to go and are unable to access medical services.
